After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi from the east came to Jerusalem 2 and asked, “Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.”
Matthew 2:1-2
Think about it! The wise men basically asked the king of the Jews, “Where is the King of the Jews?” This boiled King Herod’s blood because the wise men considered a baby to be a greater king than him, yet he was called Herod the Great!
The truth is that Jesus was more than a mere king from birth. He was born King of kings and Lord of lords. He is God incarnate – meaning in the flesh. Matthew 1:23 quotes Isaiah 7:14 saying,
“The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel” (which means “God with us”).

Who could imagine a king? The wise men could. They had so much faith that they would see Jesus and that he was the promised King that they prepared unique gifts for their meeting with Him – gold, frankincense, and myrrh. What an incredible encounter for a mother chosen by God out of a godless place called Nazareth to bring forth the Son of God born of the Holy Spirit, yet born in a place where animals eat – a manger.
Nathanael said,
And Nathanael said to him, “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” Philip said to him, “Come and see.”
John 1:46
Death was constantly following Jesus from childhood to the cross, but death had no victory because Jesus still couldn’t die on the cross until He gave up His Spirit and said, “It is finished!” Although the family of Christ went through trials to safely bring Him into the world, the day of His birth was filled with peace, joy, hope, love, and a promise kept.
Christmas should be more than just a new sweater, toy, or video game wrapped in a gift box. It should be celebrated for more than just one day. Because the celebration of Christmas is not just the celebration of Jesus’ birth, thank God it didn’t stop there, but it’s about the purpose of His birth – to die for our sins so that we could be born again.
So while you’re celebrating this season, let the same joy that was in the wise men to see Jesus be in you. God already did more than we could ask, think, or imagine when Jesus came the first time, and Jesus tells us that He’ll be coming back again! Get excited! God bless you!

God, I know that I am a sinner. Right now, Lord, I turn from my sins, and I ask you to forgive me. Jesus, I believe that you died on the cross and rose from the grave, for me. I open my heart and life for You to come in, and I receive You as my Lord and Savior. Thank You, God for saving me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
