In Spite of Your Changing Moods

Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. ¹² Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer.

Romans 12:11-12

Sometimes we get tired of trying to keep up the mature Christian energy. Can we be honest and admit that sometimes we really just want to be a mere Christian. You will get tired, angry at times, frustrated, tempted, and just downright lazy! This is the very reason why the first verse says, “But, keep your spiritual fervor.”

When busy with little children that are in constant need of your care, a parent many times has to be careful of the kind of ministry obligations they put on themselves. My wife and I have personally experienced that, but we also have to be careful to not use parenting and busy life as an excuse to do little to nothing for Jesus.

Don’t Be Lazy

Verse 11 of this passage tells us to not be lazy or careless when it comes to the things of God but to stay hot and on fire for the Lord. That means that just because you feel a certain way that does not determine what you do for Jesus. We put our life into service for God whether people appreciate it, applaud us, receive personal gain, or not. Our reward is in heaven.

In Mere Christianity, C.S. Lewis says,

“Faith, in the sense in which I am here using the word, is the art of holding on to things your reason has once accepted, in spite of your changing moods.”

Be Joyful in Hope

The last verse of our passage tells us that our hope should be a joy to us. We don’t grieve as the world does. We don’t suffer as the world does. We don’t endure aimlessly through trials like an unbeliever, because we have real hope! We have to be patient in affliction and the only way to accomplish all of these things is to be faithful in prayer and keep our heads in God’s Word.

Why? Because if you’re not praying, you can be sure that the devil is preying on you. If you are not in God’s Word, then God’s word is not in you. You will be spiritually weak and susceptible to the strategies of the enemy. Don’t put yourself in that position. “Hold on to things your reason once accepted, in spite of your changing moods.” ― C.S. Lewis, Mere Christianity

Salvation Plan
