A Quote

From Actress Sam Sorbo

“I think that parents are waking up to the fact that children are being indoctrinated away from them and away from their beliefs. And now that parents are waking up to that they’re saying, ‘I cannot abide that.’ That’s the bridge too far for them. You’ll hear people say, ‘well, it’s just indoctrination.’ Well, so is homeschooling because everything you teach your children you are putting in a doctrine, your doctrine. Parents are realizing, wait – their doctrine isn’t just slightly different than mine. It’s actually counter my doctrine, it’s against my doctrine. It wants to tear my doctrine to shreds… It took over a decade for me to finally realize, but my message to parents is: ‘you are enough… I could fail at homeschooling and we’d still end up ahead of the game. We’d still be better off.”

– Sam Sorbo

Every “Reason” to Homeschool is Diffrent…

“We HAD to start homeschooling!” Daniel

Some parents are thrown into homeschooling for various reasons, they are termed “Accidental Homeschoolers.” They can be those who suddenly found themselves in a need to homeschool, when they never expected to be doing it. They include families whose children have experienced bullying, difficulty with school personnel, medical issues, and a variety of other unanticipated situations, like the current world-wide pandemic, that doesn’t seem to be leaving.

“I work full time from home, I really don’t have the time to make this work.”

-Christine

Most of these parents do not have time to plan or research homeschool options for their kids, thus we come in!

PSP Coordinator, Homeschool 101 Director, and Counselor-

Tasha shares her story.

When we first began homeschooling, I remember the questions we had so clearly:

“Am I capable or qualified for this?” “Where do I start?” “What do I need to teach?” ” Where can I find support?” “How does this work?” “Is this NORMAL?”

Neither of us had been homeschooled before, and my husband and I wanted it to be “perfect.” Without much to go on, we jumped right in.

I was over-homeschooling. For a long time, I thought homeschooling only had to be one way, or look like the compulsory schooling we were familiar with.

That’s not so!

Our first year went so well and we were so happy, but soon, we started to feel burned out.

We found it a struggle to homeschool, prepare dinner, do any kind of home-making and work, let alone take care of ourselves.

We hated being a slave to curriculum, and feeling as if we’d failed because we didn’t get through an entire book.

After that year, we were determined to find new ways.

Now, we enjoy new ways to work and teach, taking away the “slave to school” mentality and allow our kids to fall in love with education, not “compulsory schooling.”

We use our experience to help other homeschooling parents. In our Homeschool 101, we come alongside you as experienced friends and homeschoolers, to share with you all that we have learned and to share the tools we’ve created to help you become more CONFIDENT, RELAXED, and KNOWLEDGEABLE, about everything homeschool.

This is why we started Homeschool 101, to offer parents a place to simply homeschool their kids while having the resources and information they need!

Homeschool Styles

There are many different styles to homeschooling.

What style fits you best?

Take a step back, a DEEP breath, pray, and then observe your children. How do they learn vs. how you want to teach, or not to teach?

Traditional

This is doing school-at-home, similar copulatory schooling or private schools. This is the educational style that many parents are most familiar with, new homeschooling families begin their journey by purchasing textbooks and setting up a classroom that mimics the public school setting.

Homeschool vs. Public School

Unschooling

Unschooling and de-schooling are just that, getting the public system out of your child so you can start homeschooling anew. It’s not meant to last forever. You will need to plan what your students will be learning, curriculum, breaks, etc.

Unschooling was first coined by author John Holt back in the 1970’s, as an alternative to schooling. Its described as delight-driven learning, child-led learning, interest-led learning, fun-schooling, life-experience learning, relaxed homeschooling, child-centered learning, and passion-driven learning.

See: How To Prevent homeschool Burnout

Eclectic

This style blends multiple approaches together and  works better for most families than ascribing to a single defined style.

You might choose to do both unit studies and have a hard curriculum.

Unit Studies
Waldorf

This style introduces creative play! It integrates the natural world into all aspects of education.

It de-emphasizes academics and focuses on age-appropriate learning, such as art, music, gardening, and learning diffrent languages. These are considered key focuses in the elementary years.

No textbooks are used in the first several grades and no formal grades are assigned during the elementary years; instead children are assessed by progress made.

Charlotte Mason

This style puts a heavy emphasis on using high-quality literature, which Mason calls “living books,” to teach children. She believed that education should involve the whole person, not just the mind.

Education is “an atmosphere, a discipline, a life.”

Which translates to:

  • The abundant use of narrative literature
  • Plenty of time spent outdoors exploring
  • The development of an appreciation for art, music, and nature
  • Journalling, narration, dictation, and copywork
Montessori

This is a more classical style like the Waldorf.

It involves a child-centered approach that values each child as a unique individual. Creativity and curiosity are encouraged, which leads students to value knowledge and seek it out for themselves.

“Self-regulation” is a key goal of the Montessori philosophy of education, meaning the ability of a child to regulate his or her conduct in a way that is appropriate to the situation. The Montessori method views a child’s classroom as a preparatory environment for the biggest classroom of all: life.

Roadschooling vs. Worldschooling

Roadschooling involves the ability to learn wherever you want.

Students are able to use the landmarks and attractions they encounter as a means for educational enhancement and exploration.

It involes:

Unscheduled and impromptu learning experiences

The ability to integrate travel with the subjects and themes they are learning about

A desire to help children make connections between educational material and the world around them.

Worldschooling allows you to make homeschool into a global adventure! For families who want to experience and interact with the world around them.

It involves:

Desire to travel

Introducing children to the wider world

A holistic approach

A preference for experiential learning

A need for flexibility

A desire to understand and become sensitive to other world-views

Because homeschooling can be hard, just like raising kids can be hard, I am glad to be able to utilize all these resources to keep me motivated and my homeschool family inspired. I don’t feel like I am telling the world my struggles, as I did on Facebook, I feel relieved and more happier with everything happening in my homeschool. Thank you Randomnestfamily!
