Ah, the good old middle school years. I can’t even remember everything about my very own middle school years, I do however, remember it being awkward but still filled with fun from a few good friends!
The middle school years are such a unique time, typically covering ages 11 to 13 (sometimes 10 and even 14, depending on the level of your homeschool student), when kids start transitioning from childhood to those early tween years. It’s a period filled with change—physically, emotionally, and mentally—as they begin to explore their identity (who they are, and who they are in Christ) and gain more independence. As parents, we’re guiding them through this exciting, yet sometimes challenging, season of life. They may start to outgrow certain activities or express new interests, and we can be right there, helping them navigate the ups and downs with patience and understanding. Parenting a tween means we get to be their support as they figure things out, while gently guiding them toward responsibility and maturity!
Having had two past middle schoolers, a now present middle schooler and an upcoming middle schooler, I am here to say that homeschooling through middle school doesn’t have to be difficult! Sure, the subjects get a little more complex and the emotions can run high (I have four girls, but I am sure boys can get just as high), but it’s also a beautiful time of growth. You have the flexibility to meet them where they are—academically and emotionally. You can foster independent learning while still being their biggest cheerleader. With homeschooling, you can balance giving them more responsibility with plenty of grace and mercy as they learn. And let’s not forget, this is a perfect time to continue weaving faith into their education, helping them see that God is guiding their path, even though the transitions of middle school. My hope for you is that together, you and your student can make these years an enriching, fulfilling journey!
In this guide, I will walk you through everything you need to know about your middle schooler grade by grade, giving you some tips and tricks along the way. We will start with how to keep their records, then transition into how to prepare them for high school.
