Does water baptism bring you eternal life? The first baptism really occurred, when God flooded the earth and saved Noah and his family, but that was a removal of the old world.

19 So he went and preached to the spirits in prison—

20 those who disobeyed God long ago when God waited patiently while Noah was building his boat. Only eight people were saved from drowning in that terrible flood. 21 And that water is a picture of baptism, which now saves you, not by removing dirt from your body, but as a response to God from a clean conscience. It is effective because of the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

1 PETER 3:19-21

Water baptism was performed by John the Baptist, who also baptized Jesus Christ. Therefore, it must be important, but in what way? There are some who believe that since they were baptized, they’re going to heaven, but this just isn’t biblical. Jesus said,

3 Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again.”

4 “How can someone be born when they are old?” Nicodemus asked. “Surely they cannot enter a second time into their mother’s womb to be born!”

John 3:3-4

The Jewish leader, named Nicodemus, talking to Jesus was most likely baptized, either by John the Baptist or someone else. Nevertheless, Jesus way telling them that baptism wasn’t enough they needed be “born again” – to put their faith and trust in Him.

Jesus said “Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again.” (John 3:3). That means that salvation is in Jesus Christ alone. In fact, when you are baptized it represents the change that has already occurred in your heart.

Many people have been baptized and have gone into the water dirty and came out of the water dirty, because their hearts had not been converted to actually following Christ. They said the salvation prayer, but they did not commit themselves to Jesus.

When you are baptized that means that you are a follower of Christ – Christian, already! Baptism represent a commitment to live a holy life – taking off the old person devoted to the world, to put on the new person devoted to God (Romans 6:11-18).

Who’s name are we baptized in? It is in the name of the Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit – “Jesus Christ our Lord” (Matthew 28:19, Acts 2:38, Acts 8:12, 16, Acts 10:48, and Acts 19:5).

Why should you get baptized? Because Jesus was baptized, so we follow Him, to identify with His death, burial and resurrection (Romans 6:3-4). Also, because Jesus commanded it:

18 Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

Matthew 28:18-20

So when we die do we go to hell, if we don’t get baptized, No, but as long as there is water and another true Christian, then there’s no excuse!

36 Now as they went down the road, they came to some water. And the eunuch said, “See, here is water. What hinders me from being baptized?” 37 Then Philip said, “If you believe with all your heart, you may.” And he answered and said, “I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.” 38 So he commanded the chariot to stand still. And both Philip and the eunuch went down into the water, and he baptized him.

Acts 8:36-38
