The Book of Matthew

The book of Matthew begins the Gospels of Jesus Christ. We love to study the Gospels around the holidays, as a family. No matter what time of the year it is, the Gospels are never outdated.

“She will bear a Son; and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.”(Matthew 1:21)

Background:

Written for Jews, by a Jew, the book of Matthew’s design is to present Jesus Christ as the King of The Jews, the long-awaited Messiah. His genealogy, baptism, messages, and miracles, all point to Jesus Christ as King. Even in His death, defeat is turned to victory by the Resurrection of Christ, echoing the message again that the King of the Jews LIVES. (Referenced from the NKJV Bible)

If you have teenagers, you can try to read the Gospels in 40 days with your family, by combining chapters and outlining your plan on a calendar. If you would like to see what this looks like.

If you need to, start with one chapter a day, especially if you have younger kids. Be sure to use the accompany assignments to keep Children listening and engaged, while the reading is done. A good idea is to document reading.

After each lesson, we have included optional family discussion topics which are popular among our curriculum.

Each family Bible study assignment or download has the complete curriculum plan for that lesson. (See overview)

Before starting your bible Study...

Always be consistent in having Bible study with your family. The more you do, the more they look forward to it, the more you grow as a family.

Our kids may be tired, we may be tired; either way, each lesson will be to the point. Yet leaving room for you to expound upon scriptures for days, weeks, or even a month.

These lessons can be done day or night. Whenever your family gets together to study!

Start off small, and then go as the Lord leads you. Don’t always expect things to be perfect. Add effort and allow God to do the rest.

You got this!

Ideally:

Turn off any electronics and distractions as much as possible at least 20-30 minutes before sitting down together. Try to pre-read and look over the lesson before starting it with your family.

41. and puzzles the Pharisees by a question about the Messiah.

Optional Family Discussion Topics:

  • How does Jesus’ “Parable of the Wedding Feast”, specifically verses 8-14, relate to the Christian church?

God is the king and the wedding is for the Son, who is Jesus Christ (verse 2). The servants in verse 8 represent believers in Christ, who are suppose to gather in people to build the church of Jesus Christ (verse 9). We are supposed to fill up the church and God is supposed to determine, who truly belong to Him. The “wedding hall”, represents all the churches, but not everyone in the church belongs to God, so God will eliminate all of the bad and keep the good. Those who are speechless (verse 12), will not be able to come up with any reasons why God should accept them, because the darkness of their life will be exposed by the light.  Those who are faithful Christians will be rewarded, while those who are false Christians are condemned (verse 13).

Many are called to faith in Jesus Christ, and many stay in church for decades, but only few have a sincere saving faith that empowers them to remain faithful to Christ until the end.  This is the reason why only few are chosen, which you can compare to like 25% out of a hundred, so if there were 400 million Christians, only 100 million would be expected to be true believers and therefore, chosen.

  • What is the “great commandment” and what other commandment is like it (verse 36-40)? Why are these commandments so important (verse 40)?
