Welcome to seventh grade! I’m excited to guide you through this very important year, since I have now had two seventh graders in the past. You will be surprised to know that this year isn’t much different from sixth grade, so, lets jump into how to successfully homeschool the seventh grade.

Just like in the sixth grade, the seventh grade is a year you’ll find that your child is ready to tackle more complex topics and take on new responsibilities in their learning. Don’t be afraid to allow your student to take the reins and help a sibling with their schoolwork.

Building On 6th Grade Skills

Seventh grade is a year where things start to ramp up academically. Your child will move into more abstract thinking in math and science, and their writing and reading comprehension will become more sophisticated.

They’ll also need to start thinking critically about the world around them, both in terms of history and current events. But this can be done by just sitting with them to watch and discuss a news clip. I didn’t expect my students to watch full out news, especially in today’s society. Whatever happened to the times when we watch news as a family (year 2000’s and below)?

However, new skills would have been developed by this time. So, again we are building on this, and you’ll also be preparing them for the challenges of high school every year.

As always, homeschooling gives us the flexibility to move at their pace, allowing for extra time where needed and the freedom to explore areas of interest, which I also used as an opportunity to continue connecting their studies with their faith, helping them see God’s hand in all they learn

How Can I Teach 7th Grade?

Seventh grade is all about developing your child’s independence. While you’ll still play a crucial role in guiding their learning, it’s important to give them more responsibility over their work. This is a great time to introduce research projects where they can choose a topic of interest, dig into it, and present their findings. I also find that many students do well at self-led curriculum in this grade.

If you haven’t used a unit study before, this is also a perfect time to try some! Unit studies let you combine multiple subjects around a single topic, which can make learning more cohesive and fun. For example, if your child is fascinated by ancient civilizations, you can tie in history, geography, reading, and even science projects related to that topic.

At the same time, it’s okay if they still need you to walk them through tricky math problems or help edit their essays, I still do this for my high school students taking college courses. Every child develops at their own pace. Keep encouraging them to be curious, ask questions, and find joy in learning.

Remember, as you teach, it’s okay to bring in faith-based lessons. Whether you’re studying world history or biology, there are plenty of opportunities to show how God’s design is present in everything.

Resources to Add to the Homeschool Library

Now’s a great time to add some more advanced resources to your homeschool. If you have not yet started building up a great homeschool library, the article Ultimate Homeschooling Supplies For Elementary School Mastery, will help you get started with the basics!

Interactive software for math or coding, detailed science kits, and in-depth literature will help keep your seventh grader engaged. Consider investing in a good set of reference books, such as a comprehensive world atlas or science encyclopedia. I have also found great use of S.T.E.A.M. subscription-based boxes. But to save money, homemade science projects are still the best!

Look for opportunities to tie in extracurricular interests, too. If your child is into music, sports, or art, you can find ways to incorporate these into their studies.

7th Grade Core Subjects

Below, you’ll find the core subjects and what to expect at this grade level. If your student hasn’t fully mastered their current level yet, don’t worry! Every student learns at their own pace, and homeschooling allows us to create an education that fits their unique needs. Focus on the areas where they need a little extra help, and, in time, they’ll catch up.

Math: Pre-algebra, negative numbers, and ratios.

Language Arts: Literary analysis, persuasive writing, and advanced grammar.

Science: Life science, genetics, and an introduction to chemistry.

Social Studies: Medieval history, geography, and cultural studies.

Physical Education: Fitness routines and healthy lifestyle habits.

You can track your child’s physical education easily with the Interactive Physical Education Log.

Is My Child Ready for the Next Grade?

By the end of seventh grade, your child should have a solid foundation in pre-algebra, be able to analyze literature (at grade level only, if they can do advanced analyzation, they might be ready for the next level or more in this subject) and show a good understanding of life science concepts. Are they taking more initiative with their work? Are they thinking more critically? If so, they’re likely ready to move on to eighth grade.

But again, don’t rush. If they need more time, that’s okay. Homeschooling allows you the freedom to take the time needed for mastery. Allow them to work at their own pace, do not threaten to hold them behind, as this messes up the “tailor-made” education that homeschooling is about. Many of us homeschooled because we wanted our kids to go at their own pace.

Conclusion

Seventh grade is a BIG step towards high school. Just like at the conclusion of sixth grade, continue to encourage your child’s independence, nurture their love of learning, and always remember to include God in your homeschool journey. Soon, you guys will be ready to take on the challenges of eighth grade next!
