(Without Losing Your Sanity!)
41 states require fine arts in elementary and middle school, and many also include health and PE. If you’re homeschooling in Illinois, Washington, or California, you’ve likely heard about the required core subjects: Language Arts, Math, Science, and Social Studies. But did you know that Health and Visual & Performing Arts are also required subjects, especially in grades 1 through 6?
If you’re enrolled with 5 Arrow Homeschool Academy, we’ve already taken care of the legal administrator role on your behalf. Your job as a parent is to simply offer instruction in the subjects outlined for your state, including Health and Fine Arts.
But don’t worry, meeting these requirements doesn’t mean you need to suddenly become a certified nutritionist or an opera director. You can absolutely fulfill them in a relaxed, enjoyable, and flexible way that still counts toward your student’s education.
Here’s how to make it work, with structure, simplicity, and maybe even a little fun (Without Losing Your Sanity)!

Why This Matters (Even If It’s Not on a Transcript Yet)
As your child’s primary teacher, it’s important to provide age-appropriate exposure to these subjects during the year. That doesn’t mean a full curriculum or rigid lesson plans, it means offering learning experiences, documenting them, and watching your student thrive in the process.
If your child does an art project and learns how to take care of their body, I say you’ve succeeded!
Of course, since you can use videos and books to introduce these subjects, I have some resources in the shop that might help, like our Video Report Templates, Book Report templates, and more!
