Because the Lord witnessed the vows you and your wife made when you were young. But you have been unfaithful to her, though she remained your faithful partner, the wife of your marriage vows.
15 Didn’t the Lord make you one with your wife? In body and spirit you are his. And what does he want? Godly children from your union. So guard your heart; remain loyal to the wife of your youth.
16 “For I hate divorce!” says the Lord, the God of Israel. “To divorce your wife is to overwhelm her with cruelty, ” says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies. “So guard your heart; do not be unfaithful to your wife.”
Malachi 2:14-16
Why is marriage still important today? Because not only does it provide security in an intimate relationship between husband and wife, but it advances the kingdom of God. How?
In verse 15, God explains to the unfaithful priests, that marriage is suppose to produce godly offspring, which in Israel’s case would also produce a godly nation.
Today, marriage is not valued as much anymore and what is the result: increased wickedness, rebellious children, and immoral relationships. God is telling us in verse 14, that He doesn’t even accept our worship, when our hearts are not right towards our spouse.
What about the singles? Any relationship outside of marriage, between a man and a woman will not produce godly children, but you can expect sure disorder and dysfunction, if you’re doing what married couples do, outside of marriage.
Faithful marriage advances the kingdom of God, societies, governments, and promotes righteousness for future generations.
How am I being unfaithful to my spouse? Whether it be having a sexual relationship with someone other than your spouse, an intimate emotional relationship with someone other than your spouse, or through pornographic content such as: X-rated movies, pictures, or videos.
“Make no room for the flesh” – Romans 13:14. If you’ve been involved in these things, its time to quit, because if you’re single you’re being unfaithful to God, but if you’re married, you’re being unfaithful to your spouse and God.
Divorce damages the lives of every member of your family and further depreciates the value of marriage. Therefore, God hates divorce – Malachi 2:16. Be faithful today, and may the Lord bless you and keep you!
