“Do not grieve, for the joy of the Lord is your strength.”
Nehemiah 8:10
I was up early one morning, around 5:00 a.m., getting ready for work. As I prayed and mentally sorted through everything waiting for me that day, my mind began racing. There were responsibilities to manage, people to care for, tasks to complete, and not nearly enough hours to do it all.
Then a familiar phrase came to mind:
“The joy of the Lord is my strength.”
Immediately, I felt encouraged. My spirit lifted a little. But a few moments later, another thought followed:
What is the joy of the Lord? How can I have His joy?
Many of us have quoted Nehemiah 8:10, but have you ever stopped to consider what it actually means?
When Nehemiah spoke these words, God’s people were not celebrating because life was easy. They were standing together listening to the Word of God and realizing how far they had drifted from Him. Many were weeping with conviction and sorrow. Yet Nehemiah told them not to remain in grief.
“Do not grieve, for the joy of the Lord is your strength.”
The joy of the Lord is not simply feeling happy because things are going well. Happiness changes with circumstances. Joy is deeper. It comes from knowing who God is, trusting His promises, remembering His faithfulness, and resting in His presence. The joy of the Lord is actually powerful strength, and it helps us to remember this.
God’s joy becomes our strength when we remember:
- We are forgiven.
- We are loved.
- We belong to Him.
- He is still in control.
- His promises never fail.
I realized that morning that God’s joy is not something I have to manufacture. It is something I receive as I spend time with Him. The more I focus on His goodness, the less overwhelmed I become by my circumstances.
How do we have God’s joy?
We spend time with Him. We thank Him for His blessings. We remember His faithfulness. We worship Him, even when life feels heavy. We choose to trust His character instead of our feelings.
How do we live this day by day?
Start each morning by thanking God for something. Read His Word. Pray throughout the day. Look for evidence of His goodness. Refuse to let worry, fear, or frustration have the final word.
How do we spread this joy?
A joyful believer shines brightly in a weary world. When we encourage others, show kindness, offer hope, and speak of God’s faithfulness, we become carriers of His joy.
That morning, my to-do list didn’t get any shorter. My responsibilities didn’t disappear. But my perspective changed. I was reminded that my strength was never supposed to come from me. It comes from the Lord.
And that is the beautiful truth of Nehemiah 8:10.
The joy of the Lord is our strength.
Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for being the source of true joy. When I am weary, remind me that my strength comes from You. Help me to focus on Your goodness rather than my circumstances. Fill my heart with gratitude, peace, and confidence in Your promises.
Teach me to walk in Your joy each day. Let Your joy strengthen me when I feel weak, encourage me when I feel discouraged, and sustain me when challenges arise. Help me to share that joy with others through my words, actions, and attitude.
May those around me see Your love reflected in my life and be drawn closer to You.
In Jesus name,
Amen.

Reflection:
What circumstance are you facing today that needs to be surrendered to God so His joy can become your strength?
Salvation Plan
Today, if you have not received Salvation or you would like to rededicate your life back to Christ, say this prayer:
God, I know that I am a sinner. Right now, Lord, I turn from my sins, and I ask you to forgive me. Jesus, I believe that you died on the cross and rose from the grave, for me. I open my heart and life for You to come in, and I receive You as my Lord and Savior. Thank You, God for saving me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
