Every October, Christian parents face a familiar question: Should our family participate in Halloween? Some churches offer harvest festivals, trunk-or-treat events, or other alternatives. Others choose not to participate at all. The name of an event alone cannot settle the matter. We must examine what we are celebrating, what it communicates, and whether our choices honor Jesus Christ.
Our family believes there are compelling biblical reasons to step away from Halloween celebrations. The eight passages below do not mention Halloween by name. Instead, they teach principles about light, darkness, holiness, spiritual discernment, and our identity in Christ. Let us consider them carefully, with Scripture open and hearts willing to obey.
8 Biblical Reasons Christians Should Reconsider Halloween
1. John 3:19: Choose the Light
Read: John 3:19
Jesus explains that light has come into the world, yet people may prefer darkness. This verse is about the human response to Christ, not a direct reference to Halloween. Still, it invites us to ask whether our entertainment celebrates what God calls us to leave behind.
For your family: When selecting costumes, decorations, and activities, ask: Does this help our family honor Christ or make darkness seem attractive?
2. Romans 13:11–14: Put Aside the Works of Darkness
Read: Romans 13:11–14
Paul urges believers to wake up spiritually, put aside sinful behavior, and clothe themselves with the Lord Jesus Christ. A Christian family should consider not only whether a tradition is popular, but what attitudes and actions it encourages.
For your family: Evaluate the atmosphere of each event, including its themes, conduct, and message, rather than relying on a family-friendly label alone.
3. Ephesians 6:12: Take Spiritual Realities Seriously
Read: Ephesians 6:12
Paul reminds believers that our struggle is ultimately spiritual, not against other people. This does not mean that every costume or autumn gathering is an act of spiritual warfare. It does mean Christians should not trivialize evil or treat occult practices as harmless amusement.
For your family: Teach children to distinguish fictional play from practices Scripture warns against, while showing kindness to neighbors who make different choices.
4. Colossians 1:13: Remember the Kingdom We Belong To
Read: Colossians 1:13
God has rescued believers from the dominion of darkness and brought them into the kingdom of His beloved Son. Our identity in Christ should shape what we celebrate and what we willingly invite into our homes.
For your family: Consider whether your family’s traditions reflect gratitude for God’s rescue and the new life He has given.
5. 1 Peter 2:9: Live as God’s Distinct People
Read: 1 Peter 2:9
Peter describes believers as people called out of darkness into God’s marvelous light. Being set apart does not require withdrawing from every neighbor or seasonal event, but it does call for deliberate choices that reflect God’s character.
For your family: If your family abstains, explain your reasons with gentleness instead of fear or condemnation.
6. 1 John 1:5–6: Walk in Fellowship with God
Read: 1 John 1:5–6
John declares that God is light and that there is no darkness in Him. He challenges the inconsistency of claiming fellowship with God while practicing darkness. Christians should examine whether their choices agree with the faith they profess.
For your family: Ask whether an activity encourages what is truthful, pure, and pleasing to God, and be willing to say no when it does not.
7. 1 Thessalonians 5:4–5: Remember That We Are Children of the Day
Read: 1 Thessalonians 5:4–5
Paul reminds believers that they belong to the light and the day. The surrounding passage calls Christians to spiritual alertness and self-control. It is not a calendar rule about October 31, but it gives a principle for discernment in every season.
For your family: Help children understand that following Jesus is a daily identity, not simply a list of permitted and forbidden holidays.
8. Romans 12:2: Refuse to Follow the Crowd Without Discernment
Read: Romans 12:2
Paul instructs believers not to conform to the pattern of this world, but to be transformed by renewed minds. Popularity, commercial pressure, and even the practices of other churches should not replace prayerful examination of Scripture.
For your family: Before joining a celebration, ask: Are we doing this from conviction, or because everyone else is doing it?
What About the History of Halloween?
Halloween has a layered history. Its date and some customs are associated with older seasonal observances, including the Celtic festival of Samhain, while the name “Halloween” comes from All Hallows’ Eve, the evening before All Saints’ Day in the Christian calendar. Today’s costumes, candy, parties, and neighborhood traditions have developed through many influences over time. It would be inaccurate to claim that every modern Halloween practice has one single origin or meaning.
For Christians, the central question is not merely where a custom began. It is what we are choosing to participate in now, what the activity communicates, and whether we can take part with a clear conscience before God.
But What If a Church Calls It a Harvest Festival?
Changing the name of an event does not automatically change its purpose. At the same time, a church gathering centered on fellowship and wholesome activities is not necessarily identical to a celebration centered on frightening or occult themes. Rather than judge only by the label, parents can ask what will happen, what children will see, and what message they will take home.
Christians do not all reach the same conclusion about Halloween. Romans 14 offers an important reminder to act from conviction before the Lord and avoid treating fellow believers with contempt over disputed practices. Our conviction is to abstain from Halloween celebrations, and we encourage families to seek God’s wisdom prayerfully.
How Can Christian Parents Respond?
Talk with your children before October 31. Explain the biblical principles rather than simply announcing a rule. Pray together, discuss the activities your community offers, and decide in advance how your family will respond to invitations. If you choose not to participate, you can still be loving and gracious toward neighbors.

Frequently Asked Questions About Christians and Halloween
Does the Bible specifically forbid celebrating Halloween?
The Bible does not name Halloween. Christians apply broader biblical teachings about holiness, light, darkness, conscience, and discernment when deciding whether to participate.
Is a church harvest festival the same as Halloween?
Not necessarily. Consider the activities, themes, purpose, and message of the specific gathering rather than assuming that every event with a different name is identical.
How do I explain not celebrating Halloween to my children?
Explain your family’s convictions in age-appropriate language, read Scripture together, invite questions, and model kindness toward people who make other choices.
A Final Encouragement
The goal is not to make our families fearful of a date on the calendar. It is to teach our children to love the Lord, recognize what honors Him, and follow Jesus even when the surrounding culture chooses differently. May our homes reflect His light throughout every season.

Salvation Plan
Today, if you have not received Salvation or you would like to rededicate your life back to Christ, say this prayer:
God, I know that I am a sinner. Right now, Lord, I turn from my sins, and I ask you to forgive me. Jesus, I believe that you died on the cross and rose from the grave, for me. I open my heart and life for You to come in, and I receive You as my Lord and Savior. Thank You, God for saving me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
