As October arrives, images of ghosts, witches, and frightening creatures begin appearing in stores, neighborhoods, and entertainment. Darkness is often presented as something amusing, something to celebrate, or something that has no spiritual significance.

But Scripture calls us to take spiritual darkness seriously. It also gives us a greater truth to remember: Jesus has authority over darkness.

Before we consider what our families will participate in this season, let us first remember who our Savior is.

Today’s Bible reading: Mark 5:1–20

A Man Others Could Not Help

In Mark 5, Jesus encountered a man living among the tombs. He was tormented by unclean spirits, isolated from others, and suffering deeply. People had tried to restrain him, but chains could not hold him.

Imagine how hopeless his situation must have appeared to those around him.

Yet Jesus saw a person who needed mercy.

The man’s suffering did not make him beyond the Lord’s reach. What others could not resolve was fully within Jesus’ authority.

That is where this account directs our attention, to the power and compassion of Christ.

Darkness Recognized Jesus’ Authority

When the man approached Jesus, the unclean spirits recognized Him as the Son of the Most High God. They pleaded with Him because they knew His authority.

Jesus was not intimidated by their number or strength.

When asked their name, the answer was Legion, because there were many. Yet even a multitude of demons could not overpower the Lord.

At their request, Jesus permitted them to enter a herd of pigs. The herd rushed down a steep bank into the sea.

The spirits that had tormented this man were subject to Jesus’ authority. They could not remain simply because they wanted to.

We must never give darkness more credit than we give our Savior.

Jesus Restored the Man

When people arrived, they found the man sitting, clothed, and in his right mind.

What a change.

The man who had lived among the tombs was now free from the spirits that had tormented him. His condition no longer looked hopeless, because Jesus had intervened.

This account reveals more than power. It reveals mercy.

Jesus cared about someone others had been unable to help. He brought freedom to a life marked by suffering and isolation.

Perhaps you have wondered whether your own past puts you beyond God’s mercy. Perhaps shame has convinced you that you should keep your distance from Him.

Come to Jesus. Your need does not make you unworthy of approaching Him.

This passage describes an encounter with actual unclean spirits. It does not teach that every experience of anxiety, illness, addiction, or emotional distress is demon possession. What it clearly shows is that Jesus has authority over evil and compassion for people who suffer.

What This Means for Our Families in October

Our family’s decision not to celebrate Halloween comes from our desire to honor Christ in what we welcome, enjoy, and teach our children.

We want our choices to reflect the Lord who has called us to walk in His light.

That requires discernment. Something does not become spiritually beneficial simply because it is popular, entertaining, or part of a familiar tradition.

Consider what your family is watching, celebrating, and learning:

  • Does this encourage us to honor Jesus?
  • Does it make evil, cruelty, or occult practices seem appealing?
  • What does it teach our children to admire?
  • Are we allowing social pressure to guide a decision we should bring before God?

Have these conversations calmly. Open the Bible together. Explain your convictions with patience, and let your children see that obedience grows from love for Christ.

We can take spiritual matters seriously while resting confidently in our Savior.

Mercy Gave Him a Message

The restored man wanted to go with Jesus. Instead, Jesus instructed him to return home and tell others what the Lord had done for him and how He had shown him compassion.

His story became a testimony.

The place that had known his suffering would now hear about the Lord’s mercy.

That gives us something meaningful to carry into October. We can speak about Jesus, pray for our neighbors, encourage our children in the truth, and share what God has done in our lives.

Our convictions should be accompanied by love, humility, and a willingness to point others toward Christ.

Jesus has authority over darkness. Let that truth shape both your confidence and your choices.

Prayer

Father, thank You for Your power and mercy. Help us remember that darkness is never greater than You. Give our family wisdom to recognize what honors You and courage to obey Your Word. Keep our hearts from fear, pride, and compromise. Teach us to explain our convictions with love and to share the hope we have in Jesus. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Reflect

What choice does your family need to bring before God this October?

Read Mark 5:1–20 together. Discuss what this account reveals about Jesus’ authority, His compassion, and the importance of sharing what He has done.
