“Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful.”

Colossians 4:2

Wait! Before you ask God for anything, I need you to stop and meditate on all the things He has done in your life already and offer thanksgiving for some of the blessings that come to your mind. The Bible says this:

“Enter his gates with thanksgiving, and his courts with praise! Give thanks to him; bless his name! For the Lord is good; his steadfast love endures forever, and his faithfulness to all generations.”

Psalm 100:4-5

How relevant today is this scripture when the world is racing to fulfill that Christmas wish list? During this holiday season, we need to fix our attention on the one who we are celebrating and honor Jesus with our praise, worship, our time, and with our lives. We need to be Christians. You might be saying wait I am a Christian, and that’s fine for you to know that but our neighbors, family, friends, coworkers, and strangers need to see Jesus through our lives.

Colossians 4:2 tells us to be “…watchful.” In order to do that we need to be focused. In order to be focused we must devote ourselves to prayer every day.

When you wake up in the morning, you should begin your day by saying, “Thank you Jesus for another day….” Then, pray with all kinds of prayers, which are requests for God to do something in the lives of others first, then for yourself. This will sharpen your spirit and mind to be aware of what the Holy Spirit might be telling you to do and will keep you aware of the schemes of the devil, helping you to respond to challenging situations in a Biblical way.

Why do we do this?

We do this because of what Jesus did for us on the cross. God’s faithful love should compel you to demonstrate your love for Him through your life.

Research on positive psychology suggests that gratitude can help people experience greater happiness, enjoy good experiences, feel more positive emotions improve their health, deal with adversity, and build strong relationships. It makes sense, but there’s even more of a blessing when your gratitude is directed at God who is the source of our life.

When is Thanksgiving

With that said, don’t wait until Thanksgiving Day to be thankful, be thankful every day, and “feed on God’s faithfulness” – Psalm 37:3.

Salvation Plan

Today, if you have not received Salvation or you would like to rededicate your life back to Christ, say this prayer:

God, I know that I am a sinner. Right now, Lord, I turn from my sins, and I ask you to forgive me. Jesus, I believe that you died on the cross and rose from the grave, for me. I open my heart and life for You to come in, and I receive You as my Lord and Savior. Thank You, God for saving me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
