In this short and very fun information filled unit, your family will learn the Christian perspectives of what is St. Patrick’s Day, who was St. Patrick, do Christians celebrate St. Patrics Day, and more about the holiday. Grab your kids or students and join us in a special study on the famous holiday: St Patrick’s day unit. Also included are Christian based assignments and crats to commemorate the day!
So, What Is St. Patrick’s day?
Is this a Christian holiday? Why do people wear green? Why is his name St. Patrick? Was Patrick even a saint? Have you ever wondered about any of these questions? Or are you like me, every time I see St. Patrick’s Day come up, I just blaze past all the green shamrocks, leprechauns, and pots of gold filled with chocolate covered coins. As my kids ask me, “What’s St…. Patrick’s Day?” I find some quick answers and leave it at that.
Now, I have teenagers and it’s about time I really explored what exactly this holiday is, so join me in this unit!
Only Four Fun Lessons!
This unit study will not take a whole day, you can do sections or take a break from the norm and replace a subject your student is already working on, such as: art, language arts, social studies or history.
These lessons can also be done in two days, if desired. You can complete assignments and projects throughout the month of march for fun.
If there is an additional writing prompt that you want your upper-level grades to do, you can add points or credits for a fully written paper. A writing rubric & planner is included!
St. Patrick’s Day lessons
Each lesson has its own set of assignments or crafts. Instead of listing grade levels, assignments or crafts are labeled as “upper level,” or “lower level,” because many homeschool families don’t base students off “grade level.” Many students are on multiple “grade levels.” It’s the beauty of homeschool and a tailor-made education!
Regardless of “grade” or level, choose the assignment that fits your child and have fun!
Some lessons have additional assignments. These are bonus assignments for outside study or writing prompts, if you do them, choose based on the level of your student.
We’ve Included Read alouds!
Read alouds are a portion of reading that the teacher or parent reads to the students. There are “words to know,” and other optional sections you can utilize while teaching the lesson, especially if you are using this unit to temporarily replace a core subject such as language arts.
Lesson 1
First, lesson 1 will take you back to where it all started, with a short lesson on what exactly St. Patrick’s Day is. The secrets out, it didn’t start in Ireland!
Lesson 2
Second, Lesson 2 will introduce your students to good ole St. Patrick himself, his life story and how he became who he was. Hint: Is has something to do with pirates….
Lesson 3
Next, lesson 3 dives into whether we as Christians should celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. The answer might surprise you!
Lesson 4
Finally, lesson 4 is all about exploring more details about St. Patrick’s Day. Like where did those pesky Leprechauns come from, and did you hear about the legend of the clover?
