In today’s devotion, we will see how young King David’s faith and understanding helped him win victory over a giant problem, in David’s Gigantic Battle, Devastating Results & No Weapons

“And David put his hand in his bag and took out a stone and slung it and struck the Philistine on his forehead. The stone sank into his forehead, and he fell on his face to the ground.” 1 Samuel 17:49 ESV

Background

The Philistines had stripped every blacksmith from the land of the Israelites so that they could not make weapons. They did this because they were in war with Israel and didn’t want to take a chance on being defeated. With that, they the Philistines sent out a giant warrior:

“Then Goliath, a Philistine champion from Gath, came out of the Philistine ranks to face the forces of Israel. He was a giant of a man, measuring over nine feet tall! He wore a bronze helmet, a two-hundred-pound coat of mail, bronze leggings, and carried a bronze javelin several inches thick, tipped with a twenty-five-pound iron spearhead, and his armor bearer walked ahead of him with a huge shield.

He stood and shouted across to the Israelis, “Do you need a whole army to settle this? I will represent the Philistines, and you choose someone to represent you, and we will settle this in single combat! 9 If your man is able to kill me, then we will be your slaves. But if I kill him, then you must be our slaves! 10 I defy the armies of Israel! Send me a man who will fight with me!” 1 Samuel 17:4-8 TLB

God Prepared A way

God prepared the way to show his glory. It was during this time that young David came along. He had no war experience nor any formal weapons but knew what God had done for him in the past.

“Don’t worry about a thing,” David told him. “I’ll take care of this Philistine!”

“Don’t be ridiculous!” Saul replied. “How can a kid like you fight with a man like him? You are only a boy, and he has been in the army since he was a boy!”

But David persisted. “When I am taking care of my father’s sheep,” he said, “and a lion or a bear comes and grabs a lamb from the flock, 35 I go after it with a club and take the lamb from its mouth. If it turns on me, I catch it by the jaw and club it to death. 36 I have done this to both lions and bears, and I’ll do it to this heathen Philistine too, for he has defied the armies of the living God! 37 The Lord who saved me from the claws and teeth of the lion and the bear will save me from this Philistine!” 1 Samuel 17:32-37 TLB

God’s Victory

David stood guard, unafraid of the enemy. He defeated Goliath that day but understood that the victory was God’s.

“You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. This day the Lord will deliver you into my hands, and I’ll strike you down and cut off your head…” 1 Samuel 17:45-46 NIV

David’s faith that God would fight this battle for him was stronger than Goliath, his mighty armor, and the Philistine army!

The victory was the Lords and David, simply a vessel used by God to accomplish His will.

“So David triumphed over the Philistine with a sling and a stone; without a sword in his hand he struck down the Philistine and killed him.” 1 Samuel 17:50 NIV

The Truth About Why We Miss Out On God's Blessings | Randomnestfamily.org

Are you amid a battle today, with no weapons?

We don’t fight our spiritual battles with formal weapons.

For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. 4 The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. 5 We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ. 6 And we will be ready to punish every act of disobedience, once your obedience is complete. 2 Corinthians 10:3-6 NIV

What weapons do we have in Christ?

What weapons do we have in Christ? The weapons of prayer. The Word of God and worship. This is our spiritual warfare. That’s how we fight our battles on our knees.

David had pronounced victory over Goliath before he even made a move towards him.

Are you pronouncing victory over your situation as you use your spiritual weapons?

Throughout the Bible, many battles were won without weapons. God has also defeated the enemy on your behalf many times, rescuing you from things you don’t even know about and never will.

Pray with confidence and have faith in the victory. The battle is already won. Sword Free. Accept what Jesus did on the cross when he said, “it is finished!” And live your life for Christ.
