Todayโ€™s Live Inspired message welcomes in the new year with The Gospel of John. We will deep dive into Exploring The Great And Epic Gospel Of John, since we are currently writing a Focus On Your Family: Family Bible Study on all the books of John.

Before we deep dive into the Gospel of John, we must first learn about who he was, and what role he played in history as he wrote his testimony about who Jesus was.

Who Was John?

John, the man who wrote this book, was one of Jesusโ€™ closest friends. Imagine being so close to someone that you get to see how they act in every situationโ€”when theyโ€™re teaching, helping others, or even during hard times. Thatโ€™s how John knew Jesus!

Before John met Jesus, he was a fisherman. He worked with his brother James and their dad, Zebedee. They probably spent long days pulling nets full of fish out of the water. One day, Jesus walked by and said, โ€œFollow me,โ€ and John left everything to follow Him (Matthew 4:21-22).

John and James were nicknamed the โ€œSons of Thunderโ€ by Jesus (Mark 3:17). That might mean they had bold personalities or got really excited about things! But John was also gentle and thoughtful. He even called himself โ€œthe disciple whom Jesus lovedโ€ (John 13:23). This wasnโ€™t bragging, it was his way of saying how special his friendship with Jesus was, how he felt Jesus was towards him, how He is towards us!

John saw incredible things while he followed Jesus. He saw Jesus [1]calm storms, [2]heal people, [3]feed thousands with just a small lunch, and even [4]raise someone from the dead! He was also there at sad times, like when Jesus [5]prayed in the garden before He was arrested and when [6]He died on the cross.

Why Did John Write This Book?

John tells us exactly why he wrote this Gospel:
โ€œThese are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in His nameโ€ (John 20:31).

In simple terms, John wants us to know and believe that Jesus is Godโ€™s Son and we need to trust Him with our lives. He wants us to have a real relationship with Jesus, one that lasts forever.

Whatโ€™s Special About Johnโ€™s Gospel?

Johnโ€™s gospel is a little different from the other Gospels (Matthew, Mark, and Luke). While those books tell us a lot about what Jesus did, John focuses on who Jesus is. This is also the first book we ask new believers to read, as it helps grow new faith!
