Today’s Reading Passage
John 1:35-51
35 The next day John was there again with two of his disciples. 36 When he saw Jesus passing by, he said, โLook, the Lamb of God!โ
37 When the two disciples heard him say this, they followed Jesus. 38 Turning around, Jesus saw them following and asked, โWhat do you want?โ
They said, โRabbiโ (which means โTeacherโ), โwhere are you staying?โ
39 โCome,โ he replied, โand you will see.โ
So they went and saw where he was staying, and they spent that day with him. It was about four in the afternoon.
40 Andrew, Simon Peterโs brother, was one of the two who heard what John had said and who had followed Jesus. 41 The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother Simon and tell him, โWe have found the Messiahโ (that is, the Christ). 42 And he brought him to Jesus.
Jesus looked at him and said, โYou are Simon son of John. You will be called Cephasโ (which, when translated, is Peter[a]).
Jesus Calls Philip and Nathanael
43 The next day Jesus decided to leave for Galilee. Finding Philip, he said to him, โFollow me.โ
44 Philip, like Andrew and Peter, was from the town of Bethsaida. 45 Philip found Nathanael and told him, โWe have found the one Moses wrote about in the Law, and about whom the prophets also wroteโJesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.โ
46 โNazareth! Can anything good come from there?โ Nathanael asked.
โCome and see,โ said Philip.
47 When Jesus saw Nathanael approaching, he said of him, โHere truly is an Israelite in whom there is no deceit.โ
48 โHow do you know me?โ Nathanael asked.
Jesus answered, โI saw you while you were still under the fig tree before Philip called you.โ
49 Then Nathanael declared, โRabbi, you are the Son of God; you are the king of Israel.โ
50 Jesus said, โYou believe[b] because I told you I saw you under the fig tree. You will see greater things than that.โ 51 He then added, โVery truly I tell you,[c] you[d] will see โheaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending onโ[e] the Son of Man.โ
The Greatest And Scariest Calling Of All Time
In this passage, we see that John the Baptist once again points to Jesus, calling Him the โLamb of God.โ Two of Johnโs own disciples, Andrew and anotherโdecide to follow Jesus. Andrew immediately tells his brother Simon, bringing him to Jesus, who gives him a new name: Peter.
Peter was a fisherman; he owned a boat and had a crew. This was the livelihood he gave up following Christ.
The One The Prophets Wrote About
The next day, Jesus calls Philip to follow Him. Philip finds Nathanael, proclaiming that they have found the One the prophets wrote aboutโJesus from Nazareth. Although Nathanael initially doubts anything good can come from Nazareth, he goes to meet Jesus. Jesus surprises Nathanael by revealing knowledge of him even before they meet, leading Nathanael to declare, โRabbi, you are the Son of God!โ
Jesus promises Nathanael he will see even greater things, hinting at the miraculous events to come.
You are CalledโฆWill You Be BRAVE
We quickly see that a personal encounter with Jesus change lives, and should prompt new believers to share the good news with others. It also reminds us that Jesus truly knows each of us and calls us into a relationship with Him. Since the Lord calls us into the great commission as well, we should stand brave and ready. Studying Godโs Word so that we are prepared in season and out of season.
Time To Reflect
- How does this passage show that Jesus already knows each of us?
- What do you think Jesus meant when He said to Nathanael, โYou will see greater things than thatโ?
- How did the first disciples come to follow Jesus, and what can we learn from their story?
