Todayโ€™s Live Inspired message dives into John 2:1-12 NIV, where the quick intervention of Jesus helps an potentially urgent and embarrassing moment.

Today’s Reading Passage

John 2:1-12

โ€œWoman,[a] why do you involve me?โ€ Jesus replied. โ€œMy hour has not yet come.โ€

His mother said to the servants, โ€œDo whatever he tells you.โ€

Nearby stood six stone water jars, the kind used by the Jews for ceremonial washing, each holding from twenty to thirty gallons.[b]

Jesus said to the servants, โ€œFill the jars with waterโ€; so they filled them to the brim.

Then he told them, โ€œNow draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet.โ€

They did so, and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew. Then he called the bridegroom aside 10 and said, โ€œEveryone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best till now.โ€

11 What Jesus did here in Cana of Galilee was the first of the signs through which he revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him.

A Potentially Urgent And Embarrassing Problem

Mary notices a potentially embarrassing problem at the wedding: the hosts have run out of wine.

Weddings were the ultimate test of a persons hospitality, running out of wine would publicly humiliate the host.

Faith And Confidence

So, Mary turns to Jesus for help, showing both faith in His ability to fix the situation and confidence in His compassion. When Jesus responds, โ€œWoman, why do you involve me? My hour has not yet comeโ€ (John 2:4), His words may sound abrupt to modern ears, especially since Mary bore Christ into the World.

However, in the original language, โ€œWomanโ€ was a polite address, and Jesus was gently signaling that His divine mission was directed by Godโ€™s timing, not human expectations.

Do Whatever He Tells You

Despite His initial reply, Maryโ€™s trust in Jesus remains unshaken. She tells the servants, โ€œDo whatever He tells youโ€ (John 2:5). In this moment, we see Mary acting with faith: she doesnโ€™t argue or insist; she simply places the situation in Jesusโ€™ hands. Jesus then miraculously turns water into wine, revealing His power and care for everyday needs.

Two Takeaways For Today:

  1. Have Faith: Mary believes in Jesusโ€™ ability to help, even when His response seems hesitant. Her instruction to the servants underscores her quiet confidence in what He can do.
  2. Jesusโ€™ Compassion and Purpose: Though Jesus is ultimately following the Fatherโ€™s timeline (โ€œMy hour has not yet comeโ€), He still cares about our immediate concern. By performing this miracle, He demonstrates that He is both sensitive to human need and fully aligned with Godโ€™s will since He is both God and man.

Mary’s request and the response she received shows us that Godโ€™s mighty power can also be applied to both significant events and daily matters. We can make our requests with confidence, trusting that the best timing and method will be determined.

Time To Reflect

  • What does the miracle of turning water into wine tell us about Jesusโ€™ character?
  • Why did Jesus perform this miracle, and what was the result?
  • How did Jesusโ€™ actions at the wedding point to His future mission?
