Todayโ€™s Live Inspired message dives into John 2:13-25 NIV, where Jesus was faced with the enormous fearless task of cleaning the temple.

Today’s Reading Passage

John 2:13-25

18 The Jews then responded to him, โ€œWhat sign can you show us to prove your authority to do all this?โ€

19 Jesus answered them, โ€œDestroy this temple, and I will raise it again in three days.โ€

20 They replied, โ€œIt has taken forty-six years to build this temple, and you are going to raise it in three days?โ€ 21 But the temple he had spoken of was his body. 22 After he was raised from the dead, his disciples recalled what he had said. Then they believed the scripture and the words that Jesus had spoken.

The Enormous Fearless Task Of Cleaning The Temple

As Jesus enters the temple in Jerusalem during the Passover, He finds people turning it into a marketplace. Instead of a place of worship, the temple courts are filled with merchants selling animals for sacrifices and money changers profiting from the worshipers. Think of ministers selling you โ€˜holy waterโ€™, oils, and other things you might need in church.

Righteous Anger

In righteous anger, Jesus makes a whip, drives them out, overturns tables, and declares, โ€œStop turning my Fatherโ€™s house into a market!โ€ (John 2:16).

The Jewish leaders demand a sign to prove His authority, especially since they would now be losing money at Jesus doing this. The only thing they could do was asks what gives Him the power to disciple them.

Destroy This Temple!

Instead of answering them what they wanted to hear, Jesus responds with a mysterious statement: โ€œDestroy this temple, and I will raise it again in three days.โ€ They misunderstand, thinking He means the physical temple, but John explains that Jesus was speaking about His body, foretelling His death and resurrection (John 2:19-21).

More Miracles But Hearts Displaced

As Jesus performs miracles, many people begin to believe in Him, but John notes that Jesus โ€œwould not entrust Himself to themโ€ (John 2:24) because He knows the hearts of all people. This passage reminds us that Jesus values true worship over religious rituals and empty traditions. It also foreshadows His missionโ€”to become the true temple, the place where God and man are fully reconciled through His death and resurrection.

Time To Reflect

  • How did people respond to Jesusโ€™ miracles, and why didnโ€™t He fully trust them?
  • What did Jesus mean when He said, โ€œDestroy this temple, and I will raise it again in three daysโ€?
  • Why was Jesus so upset when He saw the activities in the temple, and what did He do about it?
