Today’s Reading Passage
John 2:13-25
13 When it was almost time for the Jewish Passover, Jesus went up to Jerusalem. 14 In the temple courts he found people selling cattle, sheep and doves, and others sitting at tables exchanging money. 15 So he made a whip out of cords, and drove all from the temple courts, both sheep and cattle; he scattered the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables. 16 To those who sold doves he said, โGet these out of here! Stop turning my Fatherโs house into a market!โ 17 His disciples remembered that it is written: โZeal for your house will consume me.โ[a]
18 The Jews then responded to him, โWhat sign can you show us to prove your authority to do all this?โ
19 Jesus answered them, โDestroy this temple, and I will raise it again in three days.โ
20 They replied, โIt has taken forty-six years to build this temple, and you are going to raise it in three days?โ 21 But the temple he had spoken of was his body. 22 After he was raised from the dead, his disciples recalled what he had said. Then they believed the scripture and the words that Jesus had spoken.
23 Now while he was in Jerusalem at the Passover Festival, many people saw the signs he was performing and believed in his name.[b] 24 But Jesus would not entrust himself to them, for he knew all people. 25 He did not need any testimony about mankind, for he knew what was in each person.
The Enormous Fearless Task Of Cleaning The Temple
As Jesus enters the temple in Jerusalem during the Passover, He finds people turning it into a marketplace. Instead of a place of worship, the temple courts are filled with merchants selling animals for sacrifices and money changers profiting from the worshipers. Think of ministers selling you โholy waterโ, oils, and other things you might need in church.
Righteous Anger
In righteous anger, Jesus makes a whip, drives them out, overturns tables, and declares, โStop turning my Fatherโs house into a market!โ (John 2:16).
The Jewish leaders demand a sign to prove His authority, especially since they would now be losing money at Jesus doing this. The only thing they could do was asks what gives Him the power to disciple them.
Destroy This Temple!
Instead of answering them what they wanted to hear, Jesus responds with a mysterious statement: โDestroy this temple, and I will raise it again in three days.โ They misunderstand, thinking He means the physical temple, but John explains that Jesus was speaking about His body, foretelling His death and resurrection (John 2:19-21).
More Miracles But Hearts Displaced
As Jesus performs miracles, many people begin to believe in Him, but John notes that Jesus โwould not entrust Himself to themโ (John 2:24) because He knows the hearts of all people. This passage reminds us that Jesus values true worship over religious rituals and empty traditions. It also foreshadows His missionโto become the true temple, the place where God and man are fully reconciled through His death and resurrection.
Time To Reflect
- How did people respond to Jesusโ miracles, and why didnโt He fully trust them?
- What did Jesus mean when He said, โDestroy this temple, and I will raise it again in three daysโ?
- Why was Jesus so upset when He saw the activities in the temple, and what did He do about it?
