Today’s Reading Passage
John 3:1-21NIV
Now there was a Pharisee, a man named Nicodemus who was a member of the Jewish ruling council. 2 He came to Jesus at night and said, โRabbi, we know that you are a teacher who has come from God. For no one could perform the signs you are doing if God were not with him.โ
3 Jesus replied, โVery truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again.[a]โ
4 โHow can someone be born when they are old?โ Nicodemus asked. โSurely they cannot enter a second time into their motherโs womb to be born!โ
5 Jesus answered, โVery truly I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit. 6 Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit[b] gives birth to spirit. 7 You should not be surprised at my saying, โYou[c] must be born again.โ 8 The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.โ[d]
9 โHow can this be?โ Nicodemus asked.
10 โYou are Israelโs teacher,โ said Jesus, โand do you not understand these things? 11 Very truly I tell you, we speak of what we know, and we testify to what we have seen, but still you people do not accept our testimony. 12 I have spoken to you of earthly things and you do not believe; how then will you believe if I speak of heavenly things? 13 No one has ever gone into heaven except the one who came from heavenโthe Son of Man.[e] 14 Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the wilderness, so the Son of Man must be lifted up,[f] 15 that everyone who believes may have eternal life in him.โ[g]
16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. 18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of Godโs one and only Son. 19 This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. 20 Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that their deeds will be exposed. 21 But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what they have done has been done in the sight of God.
To Be Born Again
In this passage, we meet Nicodemus, a respected teacher who comes to Jesus at night, seeking to understand how one can see and enter Godโs kingdom. Jesus gently explains that to be part of Godโs kingdom, we must be “born again”โa new spiritual birth through the Holy Spirit, not by natural means. He compares this spiritual rebirth to the wind: mysterious, powerful, and beyond our control.
The Amazing Gift of Christ
Jesus then shares one of the most famous verses in the Bible: โFor God so loved the world that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal lifeโ (John 3:16). This powerful message tells us that Godโs love is so great that He sent Jesus to save us. Salvation is a gift, not something we earn by our efforts.
Darkness Will NEVER Win
Furthermore, Jesus explains that He came as a light into a dark world, and while the darkness may try to hide the light, it can never overcome it. Those who choose to believe in Him are given eternal life and new hope, while those who reject Him remain in darkness.
Examine Your Life
This passage challenges us to examine our own lives: Are we open to being born again in Godโs Spirit? Do we trust in the amazing gift of eternal life through Jesus? It reminds us that embracing Jesus brings true light and lasting life into our hearts.
Time To Reflect
- What does it mean to be โborn again,โ and why is it necessary?
- Why did God send Jesus, and what does this tell us about His love for the world?
- What is the difference between living in the light and hiding in darkness according to this passage?

Salvation Plan
Today, if you have not received Salvation or you would like to rededicate your life back to Christ, say this prayer:
God, I know that I am a sinner. Right now, Lord, I turn from my sins, and I ask you to forgive me. Jesus, I believe that you died on the cross and rose from the grave, for me. I open my heart and life for You to come in, and I receive You as my Lord and Savior. Thank You, God for saving me. In Jesusโ name, Amen.
