Halloween can make familiar traditions feel harmless simply because everyone seems to be enjoying them. A costume looks cute. An invitation sounds friendly. A church event promises candy and games. Before long, we can find ourselves following along without asking what our choices are teaching.
I want to say this with love and grace: Christians need discernment. Popularity cannot decide what belongs in the life of someone who follows Jesus.
Our family chooses not to celebrate Halloween. That conviction grows from a desire to honor Christ and to teach our children to walk in His light. We want to examine our traditions honestly, even when changing them feels uncomfortable.
Halloween Calls for Christian Discernment
“And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them.” Ephesians 5:11, KJV
Read Ephesians 5:8–11 in context. Paul reminds believers that they are light in the Lord and calls them to discover what pleases Him.
That gives us a better question than, “Is everybody doing it?” Ask, “Does this please the Lord?”
Discernment requires us to slow down. What are we celebrating? What are we admiring? Are we treating something God warns against as amusing or desirable?
A Familiar Tradition Still Needs Examination
We can become attached to the way we have always done things. Perhaps Halloween was part of our childhood, and we want our children to have the same experiences. Perhaps we worry they will feel left out.
Those feelings deserve an honest conversation. They do not remove our responsibility to examine a tradition through God’s Word.
Romans 12:2 calls us to be transformed by the renewing of our minds. Following Christ means allowing His truth to shape our decisions, including decisions we once made without much thought.
You can change direction. You do not have to keep participating in something simply because you did it last year.
Look Beyond the Name of the Event
Some churches offer harvest celebrations, costume nights, or seasonal community gatherings. A name alone cannot tell us whether an event honors Christ. We need to consider what actually happens there.
Ask what the children will see, what the activities encourage, and whether the gospel is being clearly shared. Generosity and hospitality are valuable, and Christian outreach should point people toward Jesus.
Renaming an activity does not settle its spiritual meaning. At the same time, we should not assume every autumn gathering has the same purpose or content. Evaluate the actual event carefully.
Take the Occult Seriously
Scripture warns against divination, sorcery, and consulting the dead. Read Deuteronomy 18:9–14. God instructed His people not to imitate those practices.
We do not need frightening rumors or exaggerated claims to explain our convictions. God’s Word gives us a clear reason to reject occult practices and to avoid making them attractive to our children.
The Bible does not name Halloween. Our position is an application of its teachings about holiness, discernment, and walking in the light.
Lead Your Children With Truth and Love
As parents, we have a responsibility to teach, rather than simply announce a rule. Explain why your family is making a different choice. Give children room to ask questions without treating their curiosity as rebellion.
Plan something meaningful together: a family meal, a Bible discussion, a game night, or time praying for neighbors. Help them see that a life devoted to Christ is rich in love, belonging, and joy.
Be respectful toward people who make different choices. Conviction does not require harshness, and kindness does not require abandoning conviction.
You Can Let It Go
If you have been participating in Halloween without examining it, bring that decision before the Lord. Open His Word. Ask for wisdom. Be willing to obey what you understand, even when the crowd chooses another direction.
Our October series began with Jesus’ authority over darkness. That confidence belongs at the center of this conversation. We follow Him because He is worthy of our trust.
Do not let a tradition lead where Christ has not called you to go.

Prayer
Father, help us recognize what pleases You. Renew our minds through Your Word, and give us courage to examine familiar traditions. Teach us to lead our children with patience, truth, and love. Help our family honor Jesus in what we celebrate and welcome into our lives. In Jesus’ name, amen.
Reflect
What tradition have you accepted without examining it through Scripture? What would faithful obedience look like for your family this October?
Questions Families Ask
Does the Bible specifically mention Halloween?
No. The Bible does not name Halloween. Our decision not to celebrate it applies biblical teachings about walking in the light, rejecting occult practices, and testing what pleases the Lord.
How can parents explain a decision not to celebrate Halloween?
Explain the conviction calmly, read Scripture together, and answer questions honestly. Help children understand that your family’s choices come from love for Jesus, rather than fear or contempt for other people.
How should Christians evaluate an October church event?
Look at what the event teaches and encourages, rather than its name alone. Consider whether it honors Christ, avoids celebrating evil, and clearly points people toward the gospel.
Salvation Plan
Today, if you have not received Salvation or you would like to rededicate your life back to Christ, say this prayer:
God, I know that I am a sinner. Right now, Lord, I turn from my sins, and I ask you to forgive me. Jesus, I believe that you died on the cross and rose from the grave, for me. I open my heart and life for You to come in, and I receive You as my Lord and Savior. Thank You, God for saving me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
