Welcome to sixth grade! This is such an exciting year in your child’s homeschooling journey. Sixth grade is the bridge between elementary and middle school, where your child will begin to take on more complex concepts and, with some encouragement, a little more responsibility in their learning. It’s a year of growth—both academically and personally—and a time when you’ll see them stretch their wings a bit more. So, in this article, we’ll discuss how to successfully homeschool the sixth grade.
As homeschool parents, we have the unique opportunity to guide this transition in a way that fits our child’s pace and learning style. As of today, I now have my third sixth grader, so I am excited to help you understand everything you need to know for your sixth grader!

Building On 5th Grades Skills
Sixth grade is an exciting time of transition, where your child moves from the simpler concepts of elementary school into more complex middle school topics. It’s also a time when they begin to stretch their wings and take on a bit more independence in their learning. If your student was already used to working independently, by doing online courses, self-paced curricula (i.e., Ace Pace), then they will get better in this grade. But continue to monitor their learning, making sure they are not just scraping by with the bare minimum. This will hurt them in high school when grades matter the most.
You’ll want to build on the skills they’ve developed so far—whether it’s mastering fractions, improving their writing, or digging deeper into science.
While sixth grade can bring new challenges, don’t forget that you’re still in control of how your homeschool works. You can set the pace, adjust the schedule, and tailor the learning environment to fit your child’s needs. Keep encouraging them to grow, but always remind them (and yourself!) that learning is a journey, not a race.

Learn MoreHow Can I Teach 6th Grade?
Teaching sixth grade at home means you can balance between structured learning and allowing for more independence. You might find that your child is ready for some independent work, like reading or working on math problems, but they still need you to guide them through more challenging material.
If you haven’t used a unit study before, this is also a perfect time to try some! Unit studies let you combine multiple subjects around a single topic, which can make learning more cohesive and fun. For example, if your child is fascinated by ancient civilizations, you can tie in history, geography, reading, and even science projects related to that topic.
And don’t forget—God’s hand is in all things. Whether you’re teaching science, math, or history, there are always opportunities to weave in faith-based discussions. It’s a reminder to both you and your child that their education is not just academic, but spiritual as well.

Language Arts: Reading comprehension, essays, creative writing, and grammar.

Physical Education: Daily movement, fitness, and health awareness.
You can track your child’s physical education easily with the Interactive Physical Education Log.
Is My Child Ready for the Next Grade?
Wondering if your child is ready for seventh grade? This can be the trickier part of being both teacher and homeschool parent, right? Try to focus on their grasp of core concepts. Are they comfortable with fractions and decimals? Can they write a basic essay or summary? Have they developed a good understanding of ancient civilizations? If they’ve made progress in these areas and are developing a sense of responsibility for their own learning, they’re likely ready to move forward.
But don’t stress if you think they need a little more time. One of the blessings of homeschooling is the flexibility to move at your child’s own pace. That means they might be on different levels in various subjects, and that’s okay. Remember that we are giving our children a tailor-made education.
