The hurt is real. The pain is real. Life…Well, that’s real too! Being able to cope and move on when you are a Christian, who has been or felt abandoned is tough. Today’s Live Inspired message is all about survival for when you have been abandoned by loved ones.

“When my father and my mother forsake me,
Then the Lord will take care of me.”

Psalms 27:10

If you have ever been hurt or abandoned by a loved one or a friend, remember that you are not alone. In the Christian walk, many people will come into your life, and go out, it doesn’t make the hurt any less. Especially if you were abandoned by your own parents, siblings, or spouse.

Light At The End

There is a light at the end of the tunnel. You might not be able to see it right now because everything is so fresh, the pain and the hurt. But the Lord is right there with you.

“The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.”

Psalm 34:18

You Are NOT abandoned by God

In these times of pain and hurt, sometimes its easier to make God your scapegoat, as if its His fault. You must remember that God’s love for you is unwavering and constant:

“Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.”

Hebrews 13:5

There Is A Sword

“Do not think that I came to bring peace on earth. I did not come to bring peace but a sword. 35 For I have come to ‘set[a] a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law’; 36 and ‘a man’s enemies will be those of his own household.’ 37 He who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me. And he who loves son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me. 38 And he who does not take his cross and follow after Me is not worthy of Me. 39 He who finds his life will lose it, and he who loses his life for My sake will find it.”

Matthew 10:34-39

Christ came to bring a sword, this sword divides believers in a family and is inevitable, someone truly seeking the Lord can be offensive to an unbeliever who indulges and loves the sin in their life. We can change no one, but we can pray for them.  We can’t expect them to understand why we stand for Christ if they are not willing to. As Jesus told Peter, “YOU follow me.” (John 21:22)

Your Survival

Your biggest method of survival in this season, will be to seek comfort in Gods Word. Just as this devotion is filled with scripture, fill your life with God’s word. Pray and seek the Lords face. Use a Bible journal to write down prayers to God and scriptures He has put on your heart to learn, repeat, and pray. God’s Word and prayer will provide the comfort and guidance you need during difficult times.

New Loved Ones

“There are ‘friends’ who pretend to be friends, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.”

Proverbs 18:24 TLB

There is absolutely no one who will be closer to you then Jesus. No one or thing could ever take the place of the Lord, so when all seems to go south, Christ is always there. The pain can seem so unending, you will cry and yell. But do not hold in the bitterness the devil would want you to. This only causes more pain for you and makes your life miserable in the end.

This gives satan a foothold into your life to cause even more chaos and turmoil. Remember that the enemy comes only to steal, kill, and destroy, not build. Instead, connect with your church and allow that community to surround you. Talk to a Christian counselor, or trusted friend in Christ. You can also consider joining a small group or Bible study. Sharing your journey with others who understand can be extremely comforting in this season and offer you the support and sense of fellowship that you need.

Forgiving Those Who Hurt You

Bitterness is wretched and can not only destroy your life, but others. When you feel bitter about a situation, it comes off in how you act, how you speak, and how you deal with other people, situations.

Suddenly you become that “grinch” character. It is not the will of God that you live in bitterness. For this reason, the Lord teaches us to forgive those who hurt us.

“And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you… And whenever you stand praying, if you have anything against anyone, forgive him, that your Father in heaven may also forgive you your trespasses… If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness… But if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.”

Ephesians 4:32, Mark 11:25, 1 John 1:9, Matthew 6:15

It doesn’t mean we will forget what they have done, but letting go of the pain is like releasing butterflies into the air! The Bible teaches us this about bitterness:

“Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice… See to it that no one fails to obtain the grace of God; that no ‘root of bitterness’ springs up and causes trouble, and by it many become defiled… The heart knows its own bitterness, and a stranger does not share its joy… While another dies with a bitter soul, Never even tasting anything good.”

Ephesians 4:31, Hebrews 12:15, Proverbs 14:10, Job 21:25

Survival For When You Have Been Abandoned By Loved Ones

If you are still feeling as if you can’t take it anymore, don’t hesitate to seek out professional help. There are many Christian counselors who are equipped to help you deal with these changes in your life, and help you navigate these new challenges.

Remember that you are not alone in this. Christ is right there. You must lean on your faith and gather support from those around you in Christ. If you feel that there is no one who you can talk to, professional help is encouraged. Visit the article below for more resources.

Resources To Help You Cope

Listed below are five book resources that I researched. These are books you can read while you are also diving into God’s Word and Prayer. These books can offer support and strategies for healing; however, they are most effective when used alongside other forms of support such as your Bible, prayer, counseling, or community involvement with your church.

Books:

The Journey from Abandonment to Healing” by Susan Anderson: This book is designed to help those suffering from a loss or a lingering wound from the past. It provides a complete program for abandonment recovery.

Taming Your Outer Child” by Susan Anderson: The author offers a three-step program to tame your Outer Child, which acts out and fulfills your childlike needs and wants in counterproductive ways.

Love Me, Don’t Leave Me” by Michelle Skeen: This book combines acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), schema therapy, and dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT) to help you identify the root of your fears. It is also therapist recommended!

“The wound of ‘abandonment” by Daniel Dufour: This book includes case histories, analysis, and advice to help you heal and love without the fear of being abandoned.

“Unlovable” by Morey Ostlund: A memoir that also serves as a guide to understanding and overcoming abandonment issues.

I pray this Live Inspired article has indeed inspired you, and that you find the resources of value. May the Lord bless you.

If you have yet to accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, you will never have this peace, you will always try to find solace in things, and we all know “things” don’t last forever, and bitterness will eat you up and spit you out. If you want this peace, there is a plan!
